The San Jose Museum of Art and Museo Eduardo Carrillo have given San Francsico painter Phe Ruiz the first Eduardo Carrillo Prize.
The $10,000 annual prize honors the memory of California artist Eduardo Carrillo (1937-1997) and recognizes a painter whose work merits wider attention.
Carrillo taught art at CSU Sacramento, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz, painted prolifically and executed one of the more renowned public murals in Los Angeles. The Museo Eduardo Carrillo is a virtual institution at the moment, online at www.museoeduardocarrillo.org. Efforts continue to fund and build a real-world center for the conservation and display of his work.
Ruiz works in an abstract vein in a driven, intuitive manner, heaping color onto her canvases.
